In 1953, as recreational SCUBA diving was taking hold in the public consciousness post-WWII, Rolex launched the Submariner, one of the world’s first dedicated diving watches.Much like the calibre 3135, the calibre 3130 that powers the reference 114060 Submariner, is a 31-jewel, COSC-rated, automatic movement. Additionally, the calibre 3130 has identical dimensions to the calibre 3135, and both movements share the same 48-hour power reserve.While Rolex waited for the development of its in-house quartz calibers to finalize, the manufacturer already had the 36mm angular cases ready and waiting. So rather than letting these distinctive cases gather dust, Rolex paired them with the automatic Caliber 1575 movement.A pioneering divers’ watch. At its launch in 1953, the Rolex Submariner was the first divers’ wristwatch to be waterproof to 100 metres (330 feet). This depth was increased to 200 metres (660 feet) the following year, then to 300 metres (1,000 feet) in 1989.
